Ballykealey Manor Hotel
This pleasing country house hotel designed by Thomas A Cobden (designer of Carlow cathedral) was built in the 1830s and, with gothic arches and Tudor chimney stacks among its architectural oddities, it has plenty of character. This wedding venues set in well maintained grounds and has been refurbished with considerable style by the present owners, Edward and Karen Egan, who have a very hands-on approach and work with wedding co-ordinator Mandy Murphy to guide couples through their plans.
Ballon church is nearby, and blessings can also be held at Ballykealey; the arrival is very welcoming, with a complimentary piper available and not only a complimentary glass of champagne for the bride and groom and tea or coffee for guests, but home-made biscuits and fruitcake too.
The hotel can also assist in arranging a limousine or other special transport, and a coach for guests if required; they do not take on the arrangements for guests wishing to stay on for a few days, but there is plenty to do in the area. The event is held in the dining room or a function room, depending on numbers and, unusually, all menus include a choice of a meat, fish and vegetarian main course - couples are offered a tasting night well ahead of the wedding.
Guest rooms include a romantic bridal suite and two other rooms with 4-poster beds, and all have a tone of understated luxury.
