What a wonderful venue for a wedding: Philippe and Sabine de Mey’s beautiful property enjoys a stunning waterside location at the head of Dunmanus Bay, in West Cork.

Everything revolves around the courtyard, which has been beautifully restored with cobbled paths, shrubs and flowers, and its 250-year old stone outbuildings have been converted to make four stylish suites or small apartments that are offered for self-catering or B&B.

Each one is totally individual (one large one has an open fire and is particularly appealing for a family, or for longer stays); they are furnished in very different but equally dashing styles - and there is also a self-catering cottage for eight in the grounds.

Although additions over the years have enlarged the restaurant considerably - including an elegant conservatory overlooking the courtyard garden - the original room at this remarkable restaurant is lofty, stone-walled and black-beamed, with a magnificent chandelier as its central feature, gilt-framed family portraits on the walls, generous use of candles - and the superb insouciance of using their famous grand piano to display an irresistible array of desserts.

This wedding venues got things down to a fine art - and what a formula: a central buffet displays the legendary hors d’oeuvre selection, a speciality that makes a great talking point to begin the wedding feast.

Main course specialities of local seafood or the best of meat (rib eye of beef, perhaps) and poultry are char-grilled at a special wood-fired grill right in the restaurant and then to finish there are those famous desserts, and perhaps some of the local farmhouse cheese for which West Cork is rightly renowned.

There is no wedding planning service or vintage car laid on here, but the venue will be decorated for you and a pianist will play during the meal. The food is terrific, service friendly and efficient and the ambience memorable: what more could anyone desire?
