Cloghan Castle

Between Gort and Loughrea, just outside the village of Kilchreest, this fully restored 800 year old castle makes a wonderfully atmospheric venue for a wedding. The castle is available for exclusive self-catering hire only, for a minimum of 24 hours (two days at weekends); the rental charge includes accommodation in seven romantic and luxuriously furnished double bedrooms.

This wedding venues got a selection of caterers that can be recommended and, although wedding arrangements are not made by the castle, they have an extremely detailed guide book to help you along and wedding planners can also be recommended if required. There are four churches nearby for the marriage ceremony - ranging from country churches to a cathedral - and wedding blessings are also possible at the castle, which makes a marvellous setting for photographs too.

The drinks reception can be held in an upstairs Drawing Room where there is a huge open fire - also an ideal spot for general relaxing and unwinding - and the wedding feast is served in a banqueting hall, also with an open fire, which has an authentic medieval atmosphere and looks magnificent when set up for a banquet.

As no food or drink is supplied by the castle, you can bring your own drinks - and it is possible to get a licence transferred from a local bar, who will apply for a bar extension on your behalf.

And, although no champagne reception is offered to the bride and groom on their arrival, they are given a pair of Cloghan Castle champagne glasses as a memento of the occasion - a very nice touch.
